How Long Do Formaldehyde-Free Keratin Treatments Really Last?

At SMOOTHED, we’re always searching for the best, safest, and longest-lasting keratin treatments—especially in the formaldehyde-free space. Our mission is simple: give you frizz-free, manageable hair without compromising your health or the health of your hair.

But one question we get a lot is:

“How long will my keratin treatment actually last?”

Let’s break it down.

The 3-Month Mark: What You Can Expect

Right now, the majority of formaldehyde-free keratin treatments on the market advertise results that last up to 12 weeks—or roughly three months. And from what we’ve seen after thousands of treatments, that’s an accurate benchmark.

While we’re constantly testing new formulas to stretch results even further, three months remains the standard for most of our clients. The reality is:

Without formaldehyde, longevity is naturally limited.

Why Don’t These Treatments Last Longer?

It all comes down to chemistry.

Traditional keratin treatments (you know, the old-school kind) often relied on formaldehyde—a preservative known for its long-lasting results and harsh chemical composition. Formaldehyde is literally used to preserve organs, so it makes sense that it was helping keratin “stick” to the hair for longer periods of time.

But formaldehyde isn’t something we’re comfortable using, and it’s certainly not something we want our clients exposed to. So all of our treatments at SMOOTHED are 100% formaldehyde-free and non-toxic.

The tradeoff? Slightly shorter longevity—but much healthier hair and peace of mind.

What We’ve Noticed: Heat Matters

All keratin treatments—formaldehyde or not—are heat-activated. But formaldehyde-free treatments tend to require a bit more help from your heat tools to maintain that smooth, polished look.

What we’re seeing is that:

  • Clients who are doing light heat styling throughout their keratin cycle are getting the full 3 months of results (and sometimes even a bit more).

  • Clients who air dry only may still see great frizz reduction and shine—but may notice the effects wear off closer to the 2-month mark.

The good news? The more consistent you are with treatments, the easier your hair becomes to manage, style, and maintain over time.

Stacking Treatments for Year-Round Good Hair Days

Just like traditional keratin, formaldehyde-free keratin treatments build on themselves. That means the more consistently you get them—every 3 months—the better your results get over time.

Many of our clients who stay on a regular schedule report:

  • Fewer bad hair days

  • Less time styling

  • Healthier, longer hair

  • A smoother, more polished look—even without heat

The Bottom Line

On average, you can expect your formaldehyde-free keratin treatment at SMOOTHED to last about 3 months. We’re always testing new products and formulations to see what lasts longer without compromising health, but for now, the 12-week window remains the gold standard.

The key?

Consistency.

If you’re coming in every 3 months, you’ll be living in a world where bad hair days are pretty much a thing of the past.
